Why the relationship between the U.S. and Iran has soured?

On January 3, 2020, Iranian General Qasem Soleimani was killed in an airstrike ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump, Soleimani was seen as the second most powerful person in Iran, only behind Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Pentagon said Trump ordered Soleimani’s ‘killing’ as the U.S. embassy in Iraq had been attacked by Iranian-backed militia in December. The killing of Soleimani angered Iran which launched.

While Trump said there were no U.S. casualties in the attack, Iranian officials claimed the strikes killed more than 80 U.S. military personnel. However, in a letter to the UN, the U.S. said it was ready to engage “in serious negotiations” with Iran to prevent further endangerment of international peace. Iran’s foreign minister too sad “we do not seek escalation or war.” However, more violence is expected in the region.
