Who is Qasem Soleimani?

Qasem Soleimani was in charge of Iran’s military in the Middle East. He built many pro-Iranian military groups in Iraq, Yemen and Syria. He was the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a branch of the Iranian Armed Forces, during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. Some Iranians saw Soleimani as a hero, who helped prevent the Islamic State (IS) from advancing into Iran.

But for the U.S., General Soleimani and his troops are a ‘foreign terrorist organisation. It holds the troops responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American soldiers.
