Since 2014, thousands of U.S. troops have been posted in Iraq, which is next to Iran. In 2014, then U.S. President Barack Obama ordered U.S. forces to be dispatched to Iraq, in response to offensives conducted by the terrorist group Islamic State.
In the midst of the current tension between Iran and the U.S., fears of Iraq turning into a battleground are widespread. On January 5, 2020, Iraq’s parliament voted to expel American troops from their country. In response, Trump has threatened Iraq with sanctions if it expels U.S. troops.
