Who is an amanuensis?

The elephant-headed god Ganesha is the most famous amanuensis in Hindu mythology! He wrote down the Mahabharata as the Sage Vyasa dictated the epic to him. The word is Latin for a secretary, scribe, or assistant who is employed to take dictation or copy manuscripts. It also refers to a person who is authorized to sign a document on behalf of another.

During the 19th and early 20th Centuries, an amanuensis was a male secretary at railroad or shipping companies who added travellers during their journeys.

Other tasks that a modern amanuensis is expected to perform (the term is still in current use): Write an examination for an injured or disabled person, assist in laboratory demonstrations and maintain the instruments, act as curator at an archives or museum, counsel students at a university and help an organist at a church operate the stops or turn pages of music.
