How does a country get membership in the UN?

We know about membership in clubs and supermarkets. Similarly, the United Nations too offers membership to all the peace loving countries. But, the process is not as simple as getting a club membership.

By taking membership, the members agree to abide by the principles of the UN. There is a body of the UN known as the General Assembly. The General Assembly is responsible for taking new members after discussing with the Security Council.

To get membership, a country or a government has to submit an application to the Secretary General. This application will be considered by the Security Council. This application should be approved by nine to fifteen members. Moreover, the application will be rejected if any of the permanent members vote against it.

If the Security Council approves the application, it will be presented in the General Assembly for consideration. The application should gain a majority of two-thirds of the vote. If the application gets through all these hurdles, the country or the government will be admitted as a new number state.
