Scientists have just discovered 11 new emperor penguin colonies in Antarctica

Researchers from British Antarctic Survey used images from the European Commission’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite mission to explore far off parts of Antarctica and they have discovered 11 new colonies of emperor penguins. The new identifications take the number of known active breeding sites from 50 to 61.

Two of the new locations are in the Antarctic Peninsula region, three are in the West of the continent and six in the East. Some of these sites are far from the coast and have never been studied before. But the sad part is these penguins are living on areas with critically unstable sea-ice and are at higher risks of disappearing say scientists.
