What is Ebola Handshake?

Since the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, hazmat suits and specialised isolation units have become common tools in the quest to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

A new variation on a handshake, however, is slightly less common, but it’s exactly what a UN ambassador is championing. Samantha Power, the US ambassador to the UN unveiled the ‘Ebola handshake’ by touching elbows with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the president of Liberia, at a press conference.

She has since extended the handshake to health officials directly dealing with Ebola, despite the fact that the disease is not thought to be contagious through human contact, only spreading through bodily fluids.

Critics of the handshake have slammed it as the latest in a series of moves designed to marginalise and discriminate against the West African nations that have been affected by the virus.
