What are the unique features of the Dolomites?

The Dolomites are a mountain group in the eastern section of the northern Italian Alps with 18 of the peaks over 3050 metres in height. Due to their characteristic pale colour, the Dolomites are also known as the Pale Mountains. They are formed of light coloured dolomitic limestone which acquired interesting shapes due to erosion.

The mountains are thus a combination of uneven saw-edged ridges, rocky peaks, limestone pebbles, deep gorges and steep rock faces at low levels. Some of the well-known peaks in the Dolomites include The Three Peaks, Rosengarten, and Schlern. They contain many skiing spots in winter and are renowned for mountain climbing, hiking, cycling, hang gliding and base jumping in summer, late spring and early autumn. The Dolomites were included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in June 2009.
