How did ‘news’ become ‘news’?

Because it was full of new things. The English word ‘news’ comes from the French word meaning ‘new things’.

It is sometimes thought that the ‘news’ originated from the four points of the compass: North, East, West and South. The trouble with this explanation is that it is not the usual order of referring to the four points of the compass. Another argument against it is the old spelling of ‘news’. This was always ‘newes’, which makes the compass connection impossible.
