Why do the police take fingerprints?

Look at the pattern the skin makes at the end of your fingers. Now compare them with the fingers of a friend, or someone in your family. The patterns will be different. In fact, no two people anywhere in the world have been found with the same fingerprints. In other words, your finger prints identify you as you. They cannot be confused with those of anyone else.

This is an enormous help for police officers investigating crimes. They have all sorts of ingenious ways of finding fingerprints left at the scene of a crime. They keep records of fingerprints belonging to known criminals. And they take the fingerprints of suspects too. Then they compare the ones found at the scene of the crime with those of people they suspect. If the fingerprints of one of the suspects match those they have found, then they know that the person must have left them. So he or she most likely committed the crime – and the case is well on the way to being solved.
