Where is the Plitvice Lakes National Park located?

The Plitvice Lakes National Park in central Croatia is the country’s largest national park. Nearly 300 square kilometres of the park is protected area. The park is spread across two counties- 90 per cent of it is in Lika-Senj County while the remaining is in Karlovac County. Croatia is connected to the Adriatic coast by a north-south road that goes through this park.

The lakes in the national park are connected by numerous waterfalls and water courses. The lakes are classified into two groups: upper and lower. The lower lakes are the smaller and shallower water bodies situated in a limestone canyon. The upper lakes on the other hand, are formed on dolomites. The Plitvice Lakes National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979.
