Where is the historic centre of the city of Salzburg?

The area known as Alstadt, on either side of the river Salzach, is the historic city centre of Salzburg in Austria. Some of the famous monuments here include Salzburg Cathedral, Collegiate Church, Franciscan Church, Holy Trinity Church and Nonnberg Abbey. It is a Baroque town designed by Italian architects Vincenzo Scamozzi and Santino Solari. Salzburg was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1996.

The town is not only known for its historical buildings but also for its cultural landscapes, industrial monuments and petroglyphs. The city had been a part of the Holy Roman Empire, which extended from Prussia to Italy. Many changes occurred in the politics and administration of the city during the 19th century. However, despite all these changes, Salzburg still retains its quaint charm and is a meeting place of Italian and German cultures.
