Which part of the Swiss Alps is a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

The first part of the Alps to make it into the UNESCO World Heritage Site list was the Jungfrau-Aletsch Region. This site teaches us much about the formation of mountains and glaciers and about climate change. The Jungfrau-Aletsch Region is the glacial area around the Great Aletsch Glacier. It is the longest and largest glacier in the Alps. The Aletsch Glacier is 23 km long and 900 metre thick at Konkordia-platz. The rock massif of Eiger and Jungfrau are also located within this region. Almost half of this area has an altitude higher than 2600 metres.

Except for a few trails and huts, the Jungfrau-Aletsch Region is largely untouched by humans. Travelling through this region is an adventure through ice and snow, while taking in the beautiful Alpine flowers and forests.
