Why is Mont-Saint-Michel unique?

Mont-Saint-Michel is a small island in France near the coast of Normandy. It had been a state prison under the rule of Napoleon I. The island was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The islet is circular in shape with walls and towers at the base. Above these lie the buildings of the village with an old abbey at the top.

Mont-Saint-Michel is surrounded by sandbanks most of the time. It only becomes an island when the tides are very high. One can see granite boulders rising out of the bay, between Brittany and Normandy. Before a long causeway connecting the island to land was built, reaching the island was nearly impossible due to quicksand and quick rising tides.
