Where is Castle Alhambra located?

Alhambra, the palace and fortress, is situated on a plateau overlooking the city of Granada in Spain. It is one of the most important examples of Islamic architecture in Spain. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. It was built mainly between 1238 and 1358 during the rule of the Moorish monarch Ibn al-Ahmar and his successors. The term Alhambra means “the red” in Arabic.

In 1526 Alhambra underwent some major reconstructions under the rule of Charles V, who ruled Spain as Charles I. The king had parts of Alhambra destroyed to build an Italian Renaissance-style palace designed by Pedro Machuca. Another repair and rebuilding programme was undertaken in 1828 after Alhambra was damaged by an earthquake in 1821.

Restoration and conservation work on the palace continued through the 20th century.
