What are the specialities of the Vinales Valley?

The Vinales Valley is a karst landscape in the western end of Cuba. Located in Sierra de Los Organos Mountains, Vinales is surrounded by mountains and dotted with dome shaped limestone outcrops that rise up to 300 metres in height. The Pinar del Rio Province is located towards the north of Vinales.

The valley was colonised in the 19th century. Its soil and climatic conditions are suitable for raising cattle and cultivation of food crops and fodder. In the last few years, Vinales has developed into a hiking and rock-climbing destination. The buildings in the valley are mostly houses or homesteads made of locally obtained natural materials. Colonial style single storeyed wooden houses with porches are an interesting feature of Vinales. The valley joined the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1979.
