Where is Teotihuacan located?

Teotihuacan is a holy city located 50 kilometres northeast of Mexico City. The name of the city means “the place where gods were created.” Established between the 1st and 7th centuries, Teotihuacan is a significant cultural centre of Mesoamerica. In the first half of the first millennium, Teotihuacan had been the largest city in pre-Columbian Americas. It had a population of over 125,000 at the height of its glory. In its time, Teotihuacan had been the sixth largest city in the world.

It contains huge monuments such as the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. Geometric and symbolic principles guide the layout of Teotihuacan. The site also has many architecturally important Mesoamerican pyramids of pre-Columbian Americas. Surveys on this archaeological site date back from 1864 and the excavations began in 1884. A few of the monuments such as the Pyramid of the Sun were restored between 1905 and 1910. Teotihuacan was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
