What makes the Carlsbad Caverns National Park in the USA special?

The Carlsbad Caverns National Park is well-known for the diversity of the speleothems or decorative rock formations within it. There are over 120 limestone caves in the Park which showcase cave formations of exceptional origin and remarkable sizes. The Carlsbad Caverns, fitted with electric lights, pathways and lifts, are open to the public. One of the star attractions there is the continuous geological process in the Lechuguilla Cave which keeps forming new cave configurations.

Another notable feature of the Carlsbad Caverns is the enormous limestone chamber called the ‘Big Room’. This 1220 metre long, 191 metre wide and 78 metre high chamber is the largest in North America.

In 1930, the Carlsbad Caverns National Park was designated a national park by the U.S. Congress. Its management is under the Organic Act of 1916 which established the U.S. National Park Services. The Carlsbad Park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
