What is Taos Pueblo?

A pueblo is a North American Indian settlement, consisting of multi-storeyed adobe houses built by the Pueblo people.

Taos Pueblo is an ancient pueblo belonging to a Taos-speaking Native American tribe of Puebloan people near the modern city of Taos in New Mexico in the US. This has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Taos Pueblo’s most prominent architectural feature is a multi-storied residential complex of reddish-brown adobe, built on either side of the Rio Pueblo which was probably built between 1000 and 1450.

The Taos community of Pueblos is known to guard their secrets from the outside world. Natives don’t speak about their religious customs or rituals to outsiders. As their language has not been written down, their culture remains a mystery to the world.
