What are the specialities of the Iguazu National Park?

The Iguazu National Park of Argentina is located near the Iguazu River. The park forms a natural boundary between Argentina and Brazil. The National Park covers an area of 677 square kilometres. Brazil has the Iguacu National Park parallel to Argentina’s Iguazu National Park.

One of the main reasons for the creation of the park was the protection of the Iguazu Falls and the subtropical jungle around it. The Iguazu Falls sits on a basaltic line on the Argentina- Brazil border. It is a semi-circular waterfall nearly 80 metres high and 2700 metres in diameter. Around 80 per cent of the Falls lie within the Iguazu National Park.

The nearby Atlantic forest also adds to the importance of the Iguazu National Park. The site has around 2000 species of plants and 400 species of birds. It was added to the World Heritage Site list in 1984.
