Chelsea beats Man City to clinch Champions League title

The Champions League final on May 29, 2021 will be played between Manchester City and Chelsea – two clubs from the English Premier League. This is only the third such instance in the Champion League era when the final of Europe’s premier club competition will be an all-English affair.

An All-English Affair

The final between Manchester City and Chelsea is the third occasion in the history of the Champions League when the final will be an all-English affair.

The Champions League final had been an all-English affair previously in 2008 an 2019.

The 2008 final between Manchester United and Chelsea ended as a 1-1 draw. United went on to win 5-5 on penalties and lifted the trophy.

The 2019 final was contested between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. Liverpool emerged 2-0 winners on that occasion.

Apart from England, only Spain has seen as many (three) same-nation finals – in 2000, 2014 and 2016.

On all three occasions when there have been an all-Spanish final, La Liga giants Real Madrid have been the winners. Real defeated Valencia 3-0 in 2000. They got the better of Atletico Madrid 4-1 after extra time in 2014. The 2016 final too was between Real and Atletico. The match ended 1-1 after extra time and Real won 5-3 on penalties.
