PV Sindhu bags historic world championship gold

The 2019 World Badminton Championships was held in Basel, Switzerland. After having come close on a number of occasions previously, P V Sindhu finally claimed the coveted gold medal in this edition of the competition.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Sindhu defeated Taiwan’s Pai Yu-po and America’s Zhanga Beiwen in straight games in her first two matches. She took on second seed Tai Tizu-ying of Taiwan in the quarter-finals and even though she dropped the first game, she fought back to claim the next two and win the match.

She got rid of China’s fourth seed Chen Yufei in the semi-final and blitzed through the final against Japan’s third seed Nozomi Okuhara. The victory against Okuhara in the final was sweeter as it had been the same opponent who had defeated Sindhu in the final of the 2017 edition – an epic 110-minute battle at Glasgow.
