Pakistan Batsman Fakhar Zaman Registers Highest-Ever Individual Score in ODIs While Chasing

In the second of three ODIs between South Africa and Pakistan that took place on April 4, 2021 at Johannesburg. Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman played a monumental knock of 193.

While his knock ended in defeat – the second highest score behind Zimbabwe’s Charles Coventry’s 194 not out against Bangladesh in 2009 to end up in the losing side- it is nevertheless the highest individual ODI score during a chase.

Chasing a mammoth target of 342 for victory in the match, Fakhar Zaman put on a one- man show for his side. His 155-ball 193 accounted for 59.56% of his team’s final score of 324 for nine, which is the higest proportion of runs in a completed ODI innings for Pakistan. His innings, which spanned 224 minutes, included 18 fours and 10 sixes as he went at a strike rate of 124.51 overal.

Fakhar Zaman’s 193 is the highest score ever by any batsman during an ODI chase. If not for his unfortunate run out in the final over of the game, he might have even become the first player to score a double hundred while chasing. Fakhar already has a double century to his name in ODIs, his highest score being 210 not out.

Watson’s 185 not out from just 96 balls was the highest score in an ODI chase for nearly 10 years (just a week short, to be precise). His knock came in a successful chase against Bangladesh at Dhaka on April 11, 2011.

Dhoni’s 183 not out (145 balls) came in a successful chase of 299 against Sri Lanka at Jaipur on October 31, 2005.

In Dhaka on March 18, 2012, Virat Kohli hit a 148 ball 183 as India reached the target in 47.5 overs.
