What is Area 51?

In August 2019, a public Facebook event went viral due to its bizarre premise. More than 1 million people signed up to “raid” Area 51 that September in the hope of encountering ‘aliens. This bid to uncover alien activity was met with a stark warning from the U.S. Air Force officials. Why? What’s the secret about Area 51?

For decades, the mysterious Area 51 has been the subject of conspiracy theories, with many believing that it is where the U.S. government stores its secrets about extraterrestrial activity. Some even maintain the base is where captured UFOS (Unidentified Flying Objects) and alien remains are kept. But the U.S. government has denied this.

In reality, Area 51 is a secret U.S. Air Force military facility located at Groom Lake in southern Nevada, about 150 miles from Las Vegas. It is known by its map designation as Area 51. The U.S. Government maintains that the details of Area 51 are classified for purposes of national security.

In November 1954, former U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower approved the secret development of a spy plane called U2, and Area 51, a remote location in the middle of the Nevada desert, was selected for training and testing it.

After the U2 was put into service in 1956, Area 51 was used to develop other secret aircraft. These planes were perhaps mistaken for the UFO sightings in the area.
