What are all the muscles in your body?

Your skeleton is covered with muscles. In fact, you have more than 600 muscles in your body.

Some of your muscles are connected to bones. These muscles help you move. Your leg muscles help you run and skip. You arm muscles help you lift and carry things. The muscles in your face help you laugh, speak, blink, and make funny faces. Your tongue is made up of muscles, too. It helps you chew and swallow. Muscles in your chest help air move in and out of your body.

Some of your big hard-working muscles are joined to your bones by strong, tough cords called tendons. You can feel a tendon on the back of your ankle. This tendon connects the muscles in your lower back leg, or calf, to your heel.

Some muscles are not fastened to bones. For example, muscles in your throat, stomach, and intestines help move food through your body. Your heart is a muscle. It helps pump blood through your body.

Muscles often work in pairs. The muscle in the front of your upper arm is your biceps. The muscle in the back of your upper arm is your triceps. Your biceps bend your arm and your triceps straighten it.
