What does blood do?

Chances are you have cut yourself at one time or another. What happened? Did you bleed? If so, you know what blood looks like. Do you know why your body needs blood?

Blood brings oxygen and nutrients to your cells. Every cell in your body needs these things. At the same time, your blood takes wastes from cells. Every cell in your body makes wastes you need to get rid of.

Blood helps your body in other ways, too. Blood helps keep your body at a certain temperature. Different kinds of cells in your blood fight to make you better when you are sick.

A child’s body holds about 2.4 L of blood. Adults have about 5 L. When you cut yourself and lose some blood, the blood coagulates (clots) at the spot where you bleed, forming a scab. Then your body makes new blood to take the place of the blood you have lost.

Blood is not always bright red. When blood mixes with oxygen, it turns bright red. But it turns dark brownish-red after it drops off oxygen to the cells. This is why the veins under your skin do not look red. The colour of your skin makes them look almost blue. When you cut yourself, your blood mixes with oxygen in the air and turns bright red.
