Do flowers have a sweet tooth?

What you need:

A rose flower, sugar, a vase, water and vinegar.

What to do:

1. Cut the stem of your rose flower in a slanting fashion.

2. Put the flower in the vase. Fill the vase with water.

3. When the rose shows signs of wilting, add a teaspoon of sugar and a few drops of vinegar to the water.

4. Check on the flower again in a couple of hours.

What happens?

The wilting flower begins to look fresh again.

Why?

Plants use sunlight and nutrients absorbed from their roots to make sugar through photosynthesis. When a flower is plucked from its plant, it cannot make its own food, so it begins to wilt. But when you put sugar in the water, the flower absorbs it through its stem and can stay fresher for longer.

The vinegar keeps bacteria from growing in the vase water, also helping the flower stay alive. You can repeat this experiment with different kinds of flowers to see how long they can stay fresh.
