West Indies wins its second T20 World Cup

The 2016 T20 World Cup that was held in India was contested by 16 teams. The eight lowest ranked teams first competed to qualify for the Super 10, which included the top eight teams. The Super 10 stage of the competition saw the teams split into two groups of five each.

West Indies were part of Group 1 and they got off their campaign with a victory against England. Wins against Sri Lanka and South Africa put them through to the knock-out stage. Despite losing their last game against Afghanistan, West Indies topped their group.

This earned them a semi-final against hosts India and they chased down the huge target of 193 with two balls to spare.

West Indies chased in the final against England as well and despite restricting them for 155 for nine, found themselves in trouble at 11 for three. Marlon Samuels steadied the ship and steered them close before Carlos Brathwaite’s last over heroics sealed the victory.
