Why are the Battles of Lexington and Concord important in the history of the American freedom struggle?

By 1775, the tensions between the colonies and the British government had gone out of control. Around that time, General Gage, the officer who was in charge of the British troops in Boston came to know about a large quantity of weapons hidden by the colonists near Concord. Gage sent his troops to seize the rebel leaders and destroy those arms and ammunition.

On their way, on April 19, 1775, the British soldiers reached a place called Lexington. To their surprise, a line of colonists armed with muskets was already waiting for them. But how did the colonists come to know about the attack? Paul Revere and William Dawes, two brave men had already warned the rebels about the impending attack. In the battle that followed, eight of the colonists were killed and several others wounded.

The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first military clashes of the American Revolutionary War.
