What are the special features included in the Declaration of Independence?

Thomas Jefferson prescribed how a government should function, in the Declaration of Independence. He stated that governments were created to serve the people, and could only act with the consent of the people. Jefferson was defining a democratic government.

The Declaration of Independence was a seminal document as it defined the rights of the people of the independent states.

The Declaration consisted of two parts. The first part of the Declaration described the rights of people. It stated that ‘all men are created equal and have the God-given right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness’. The second part dealt with the independence of the colonies; it contained the declaration of independence from Britain, and lists the thirteen colonies that came together to become a union of new free and independent states.
