What is known as the Treaty of Paris?

In the fall of 1781, a combined American and French force fought the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War in Yorktown, Virginia. They captured British General Charles Cornwallis and about 9,000 British troops during the Siege of Yorktown. By 1783, the British were fed up of the ongoing war. American statesmen Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and John Jay negotiated the peace treaty with representatives of King George III of Great Britain. The Treaty of Paris of 1783 was the result of this negotiation.

The Treaty of Paris marked the official end of the revolution and recognized the United States of America as an independent nation. It also surrendered most of the British territory to the east of the Mississippi River to the United States, thereby doubling the size of the new nation. This motivated the westward expansion of the newly independent nation.

The Treaty of Paris also stated Britain’s agreement to remove all of its troops from America. In return, America agreed to pay all existing debts to Britain.
