The new nation eagerly looked forward for a leader to take the helm. George Washington was an apt choice as he had proved his leadership qualities and tactics time and again. If you have been reading carefully, you might already know that he was well loved by the Americans. No wonder, he was unanimously elected by the Electoral College.
George Washington became the first president of the United States of America. He was not very eager to become the president in the beginning; he longed to retire to his estate at Mount Vernon. But he soon realised that the nation needed him and became the prime mover in the steps leading to the Constitutional Convention in 1787.
America’s faith in the first president did not go in vain. Washington proved to be an able administrator. He set simple, yet powerful models for the presidency. He took the simple title ‘Mr. President’ to avoid creating any aura of royalty around him. He reluctantly served a second term but refused to run for a third term.
