Why were Danton and Robespierre an integral part of the French Revolution?

If you have been reading carefully, you already know Robespierre. Before we talk about him again, let us get to know Georges Danton. Danton was a leading figure in the early stages of the French Revolution. Like Robespierre, he too was a Jacobin.

Danton is often described as the chief force in overthrowing the monarchy and establishing the first French Republic. He influenced the Jacobins considerably, but was executed during the ‘Reign of Terror’ mainly because of differences with Robespierre.

Maximilien Robespierre was a fanatical Republican who believed that the end justified the means. His Committee of Public Safety had the right to arrest, and often execute, anyone suspected of treason. Anyone who opposed Robespierre was executed; tens of thousands were sent to the guillotine. Even the members of the Committee were no longer safe; naturally, the Committee plotted against Robespierre and his fate was no different from those men he killed. He was the last victim of the ‘Reign of Terror’.
