A series of conflicts broke out in Haiti between 1791 and 1804. The conflicts were between Haitian slaves, colonists, the armies of the British, French, and Spanish colonisers, and a number of other parties.
This was the Haitian Revolution. After a period of struggle, the people of Haiti ultimately won independence from France and thereby became the first country to be founded by former slaves.
The revolt began on 22 August 1791; it took momentum from the French Revolution. During the course of the revolution Toussaint Louverture, an ex- slave emerged as Haiti’s most charismatic hero. Louverture freed the slaves.
He also negotiated for the French colony on Saint-Domingue to be governed, though briefly, as a French protectorate. The Haitian Revolution is now widely regarded as a defining moment in the history of the Atlantic World.
