What do we know about the rule of the tsars?

The Russians believed that the tsar was appointed by God. Until 1905, the tsar’s power was not questioned; he could do whatever he wished. In fact, he held absolute power over everything except the Church. But the tsar did not have a huge impact on the day-to-day life of his people.

Russia was a huge country. In addition to its size, it had a harsh climate which made travelling and communication difficult. The administrative system was not very efficient either. Therefore, decisions were largely taken at the provincial level. Some decisions were taken at the district and even the village level.

Nicholas II, the last tsar of Russia, also a member of the Romanov dynasty, was not an efficient ruler. He showed little interest in the matters of his country. He was stubborn, particularly in his belief that God appointed him to his position of autocratic supremacy. This created discontent in his people. His wife’s scandalous behaviour further tarnished the reputation of the royal family.
