The Himalayas stretch for nearly 2,400 km along the northern region of the Indian sub-continent. Due to the vast extent of these mountains, they cover a range of climates which give rise to an abundance of flora, that include medicinal plants of great benefit to humanity.
Some of these are as follows-
- Jatamansi- The source of an amber-coloured aromatic oil called ‘spikenard’. This oil is used as perfume, incense and as a sedative. In Ayurveda it is used as a brain tonic, anti-depressant and anti-fungal medicine. It has also been used for hair growth since ancient times.
- Himalayan Mandrake- Used in traditional Chinese medicine, it is a perennial, herbaceous plant with a thick root. However, some parts of this plant are poisonous.
- Indian Ginseng- Also known as Ashwagandha, this is a small shrub used to treat a number of conditions in Ayurveda. This plant is also called winter cherry as it can grow in very cold climates.
- Kutki- It is a herb known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is listed as endangered and is said to aid liver function.
- Himalayan Barberry- Used by locals as a flavouring agent, as medicine and for food colouring, this evergreen shrub is also eaten as a fruit.
- Himalayan Burdock- Used as a remedy for skin problems, digestive-related illnesses and to maintain blood pressure.
- Hemp Agrimony- This is a herb used mainly as a blood purifier.
