How do mountains connect us to the Ice Age?

With all the information on global warming in the news today, it might surprise you to know that we are still officially living in an ice age! The Earth has experienced five major ice ages and this one is called the Quaternary glaciation.

During the ice ages, the climate was very cold and great sheets of ice covered most of the land. Today what remains of the continental ice sheets are the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. However, the mountain glaciers of today still act like the glaciers of the ice age and the plants and animals that survive on them are similar to those that existed during the ice age.

Scientists study about the relationship between these living organisms and their environment, also called the study of ecology, by observing the glaciers of today.
