Which animals do you find in the mountains of North America?

The temperature and rainfall vary greatly across mountain ranges such as the Rockies, which run along the western coast of North America, from Canada to New Mexico. Added to this are gradient variations that give rise to a variety of habitats within the mountains.

These habitats are home to a great variety of wildlife. Predators such as the cougar, black bear, grey wolf, coyote, bobcat and the lynx roam the rocky regions while moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goats are found higher up.

Members of the deer family such as the caribou, elk, mule deer and white-tailed deer migrate between alpine meadows and forests. The lower slopes are home to small mammals such as chipmunks, red squirrels, black-footed ferrets and marmots. Wolves are also found here.

Many varieties of fish such as trout, suckers and sculpins inhabit the streams and water bodies. One of them – the green-back cutthroat trout is listed as endangered. Over 140 species of butterflies and amphibians such as the northern leopard frog and the boreal toad are also specific to these mountains.
