What is a mountain range?

A mountain range is a series of mountains that were formed at the same time and are connected together by high ground. These mountain ranges can be broken down into smaller ranges called sub-ranges. For instance the Shivalik range is a sub-range of the Himalayas. Mountain ranges are generally long. The Andes is the longest range in the world. It extends about 7,242 km.

A group of mountain ranges that are connected together by similarity in form, structure or have arisen from the same cause is called a mountain system. The Alpide belt is an example of a mountain system. It includes the Atlas Mountains, Alps, Caucasus, Alborz, Hindu Kush, Karakoram and the Himalayas.

The island of Hawaii is actually the peak of one of the mountains of an underwater range of mountains called the Hawaii-Emperor seamount chain. It stretches about 6,200 km and reaches above sea level in Hawaii.
