What is a cordillera?

The word cordillera is derived from Spanish and means cord or rope. A cordillera is meant to denote a chain of mountain ranges that are more or less parallel to each other. The cordilleras are a prominent feature in the Americas.

The Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevadas and the mountains between them are collectively known as the cordilleras of North America.

The various chains of the Andes Mountains as they extend through Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile are a part of the cordilleras of South America.

The cordillera region is known for its rich mineral deposits and mining is very prominent in these areas.
