Why are the Himalayas so important?

The Himalayas stretch across the nations of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Bhutan and Nepal covering nearly 2,400 km. It has some of the world’s tallest mountains, including Mt Everest, which at 8,849 m, is the tallest peak in the world.

The Himalayas play a significant role in influencing the climate of India. It protects India from the cold and dry winds of Central Asia. It blocks the rain-laden monsoon clouds coming from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea and causes precipitation in the form of rain or snow. The resulting rainfall in the northern plains of India makes it one of the most fertile areas in the world.

It also forms a strong defensive barrier in the north and protects the country from invaders. It gives rise to major rivers such as the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra. The Himalayas are home to many endangered species of plants and animals. The Himalayas have profoundly impacted the culture and economy of India and are truly the crowning glory of this nation.
