Why are the Appalachian Mountains important?

The Appalachian Mountains are found in the north-eastern region of North America. They were formed around 480 million years ago and are one of the oldest mountains in the world. They extend almost 3,200 km from the Canadian province of Newfoundland to Alabama in the United States. Mt. Mitchell in North Carolina is the highest peak in the Appalachians at 2,037 m. The Appalachian Mountains are divided into three sections – Northern, Central and Southern.

The origins of the word Appalachian can be traced back to the remains of a native American village that was discovered in Tallahassee, Florida in 1528, which was called ‘Apalachen’. Did you know that in the early 19th century, Washington Irving proposed the name ‘Appalachia’ for the USA?
