Which are some truly bizarre snacks?

Snacks, for us, range from pakoras on rainy days, bhel puri for lazy evenings or cutlets and fries while hanging out with friends. How about something different? Let’s look at some truly bizarre (and hopefully delicious) snacks out there.

Sweet, salty, crunchy… crabs

A popular snack in Japan is candied crabs – deep-fried and coated in a sweet and salty glaze. Called kanniko, this snack is very popular among tourists and is enjoyed alone or with noodles or miso soup. While some think it’s the bee’s knees, others feel that it smells a little too strongly of the sea.

Peanut butter flavoured crispy goodness

In Israel, Bamba is apparently one of the most popular snacks, especially among kids. So, what is Bamba? They look like short, brown, plump worms but don’t worry – no worms are used for making them. These are more like peanut butter puffs that are sweet and salty, crunchy yet also a bit soft. They also stick to your teeth and from the sound of them, that’s well worth the trouble!

Two ingredients, apparently a great snack

Considered one of the most cherished snacks in Russia, vobla is made from just two ingredients – fish and salt- and some sunshine. The salted and dried fish are eaten straight from the package. Though the original snack traditionally used the Caspian roach, today, any type of dried and salted fish qualifies as “vobla” and is perfect for those who fancy it!

Fruity delights

Did you know that salted and sweet plums are a popular snack in China? They might sound strange, but they apparently taste amazing – sweet, tart or with a hint of salt. Traditionally, these plums were flavoured with licorice for the extra taste. Today, there are more varieties – plums flavoured with lemon juice, cinnamon, cloves or anise seeds.

Chocolatey samosas

Potatoes and spices bring heaven down to earth in the form of samosas. What if they were filled with chocolate, instead? From India comes this fascinating creation that marries chocolatey goodness with deep fried delight! There is obviously a huge demand for it – why else would there be chocolate samosa pav? A dessert samosa after a spicy samosa sounds good!

Fermentation for best result

For those who love seafood, have a strong stomach and love to try a challenging snack, fermented shrimp from Vietnam might be just what the doctor ordered. The fermentation process along with a bunch of enzymes results in something that has a unique smell and best of all, fermented shrimps are eaten raw or maybe with some rice vermicelli and fried tofu.

Rice, spice and everything nice!

When a popular omelet centre has an inspiration for a unique snack, it’s literally bamboozling. Who would have thought that fried rice, eggs, cheese and cola could sit together without fidgeting in the same dish? Apparently, in Vadodara, you can enjoy this as a filling evening snack – if you dare!
