Why is the 1929 Lahore session of the Congress important?

The 1929 Lahore session is significant because during this session, under the presidentship of Jawaharlal Nehru, the Indian National Congress passed the “Puma Swaraj” or complete independence resolution as its ultimate objective.

This was a shift from the earlier demand for dominion status, which was not granted despite an assurance from Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India. As a result of this change of track by the British, leaders of the freedom movement changed their demand to complete freedom instead.

The Congress decided to boycott the First Round Table Conference to be held in London and all future elections. It was decided to henceforth observe 26 January as ‘Puma Swaraj Day’ or India’s Independence Day.

It was the official launch of the Civil Disobedience Movement and led to the Salt Satyagraha initiated by Gandhiji on 12 March, 1930.
