When did India win the T20 World Cup?

It is hard to predict how a tournament will shape up especially if it is held for the first time in a particular format. The inaugural T20 World Cup held in 2007 exceeded all expectations and proved to be a super hit with India emerging as the first champions in the format.

Twelve teams took part in the tournament and were divided into four groups of three initially India, Pakistan and Scotland were grouped together and while Pakistan defeated Scotland. India’s game against Scotland was abandoned. The match between India and Pakistan ended as a tie and India won the match following Two a bowl-out (this was before Super Overs came into being).

Two teams from each group qualified for the Super Bs and India was grouped along with New Zealand. England and hosts South Africa. After losing against New Zealand India defeated England and South Africa India, New Zealand and South Africa finished with equal points, but the hosts were knocked out due to an inferior run rate. India defeated Australia in a high-scoring semi-final to set up a blockbuster final against Pakistan. The final at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg went down to the wire, but the Indian players held their nerve to win the match by 5 runs and lift the inaugural T20 World Cup title.
