Try making a baking soda + vinegar volcano at home and this volcano is harmless.

Things needed:

Baking soda (not baking powder, these two are different things). Vinegar. A glass container to hold everything so there is no big mess. Paper towels or a cloth.

What to do:

Place some of the baking soda into the container. Pour in some vinegar. Watch the reaction!

Result:

As you pour the vinegar over the baking soda, it fizzes rapidly over the container. Repeat the experiment in different containers. If you place the container on a towel, cleaning the overflow will be easy.

Observation:

The baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a base, while the vinegar (acetic acid) is an acid. When they react together they form carbonic acid which is very unstable. It instantly breaks apart into water and carbon dioxide, which creates all the fizzing as it escapes the solution. With special effects, you can make a realistic-looking volcano. Add orange colouring powder to the baking soda. Hang orange-coloured paper-strips from the container rim. Take pictures as your volcano erupts. You will get impressive pictures.
