India Women end Australia’s world-record 26-match winning streak in one-day internationals

On September 26, 2021, Indian women managed their highest successful ODI chase to win the third and final ODI against Australia at Mackay.

Even though India lost the ODI series 2-1, the victory put an end to Australia’s record ODI winning streak at 26 matches.

The last of Australia’s record ODI winning streak of 26 matches came against India in the second ODI. Chasing 275 for victory and finding themselves at 52 for four, Australia were in a spot of bother. Opener Beth Mooney, Tahlia McGrath (74) and Nicola Carey (39), however, scripted a superb turnaround for a memorable win, which included taking 13 off the final over bowled by Jhulan Goswami.

Goswami got her revenge in the next match, playing a central role in bringing Australia’s winning run to an end. It was the first time the Indian women had successfully chased down a target in excess of 250. It is also the second-highest successful chase for any team against Australia in ODIS.

Before losing to India in the third match of the series, the last time the Australian women had lost an ODI was in October 2017 against England. Their winning streak, which ran for nearly four years, saw them go past the record held by Australia men’s team (21) for most consecutive wins in the ODI format.

Jhulan Goswami was declared the player of the match in the third ODI. Apart from picking up three wickets while giving away only 37 runs from her quota of 10 overs, Goswami also scored the winning runs for India. With a four from the third ball of the final over, Goswami sealed a famous victory, remaining unbeaten on 8 from 7 balls.
