Canard
Meaning:
Canard means a false, unfounded story or report that is spread deliberately to deceive people. Used as a noun, canard has an aeronautical sense too – a canard is a small winglike projection attached to an aircraft to provide extra stability.
Origin:
The word canard came from French canard meaning “duck, hoax”, which in turn came from Old French caner meaning ‘to quack’. The word was first used in English in the mid-19th Century to mean “false, baseless report”.

The report that he won by a wide margin proves to be a canard.
