The word parity denotes the state or condition of being equal, especially with respect to status or pay. It also has a mathematical meaning, where it corresponds to the fact of a number being odd or even.

Origin

The word, which has been around since the 1570s, is from French parite or directly from Late Latin paritas meaning “equality”. The meaning “state or condition of being on a level” is from the 1610s while “condition in which adversaries have equal resources” is recorded from 1955.

Usage
