What are the meaning, origin and usage of the word allude?

Meaning:

Allude means to refer to something in an indirect or brief way. You can use allude when you want to suggest something without making a direct reference to it.

Origin:

Allude comes from the Latin alludere, which means to play with from ad- towards + ludere to play, mock or make fun of. This sense is obsolete now. The term has been in use since the late 15th century in the sense hint at, suggest. In current usage, it is often followed by “to”.

She alluded to some problem at home but did not mention it

Please do not allude to his failure when you speak to him. He has been very upset about it.

At no point during the meeting with my parents did my teacher allude to my mischief in class. I was very thankful to her.
